Man dies in light aircraft crash on Essex-Suffolk county border

Police say they will remain at the scene over the coming days to assist the Air Accidents Investigation Branch in their enquiries.

 The plane is said to have come down in a field in Belchamp Walter   

A man has died in a light aircraft crash on the county border between Essex and Suffolk.

Essex Police said the victim was in his 50s and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Five fire engines were sent to the site by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, and another three were deployed by the Suffolk brigade after the crash just before midday.

The plane came down in a field in Belchamp Walter, Essex, about five miles from Ridgewell Airfield where the Essex Gliding Club is based.

The ambulance service was also in attendance, along with the air ambulance.

An Essex Police statement said: "We were called to reports of a light aircraft in distress at Belchamp Walter just before 11.50am on February 3.

"Officers attended and, sadly, a man aged in his 50s was pronounced dead at the scene.
